Once you get over 14.5v (at the battery) you run the risk of boiling off electrolyte, which cannot be replenished in a AGM battery. That is why the car needs to know that it has an AGM so it doesn't overcharge the AGM. When the VR does go, you can see 16-20v which will fry the AGM and alot of other components.
